I disagree with that ,Africans have a way of educating their young ones before the introduction of the westen education.Africans trained their young ones from the cultural value of their society like fishing ,weaving, rearing of cattles, how to manage a home etc .Although, the education is informal ,that is, it is not in school setting, it has no curriculum, no examination for evalvation but it help in promoting and preserving African culture, it was cheap,it take place any where,it also help to maintain suitablity and unity among the African society .Inconclusion, Africans has been practicing educattion before the westen education

I disagree, before the existence of the western education, Africans have their own ways of educating their young ones which was very vital, although it was an informal education but it was cheap and full of respect and seriousness.
Western education only improve the educational system Africans had through formal education.
Inconclusion Africans had education before the existence of western education.

i diagree with the statement above, reasons being that, before the arrival of the western education africans were already educated but it was informal method of education.education is a necessary tool with which a society produces the knwoledge needed for survival and sustenance.it is necessary for establishing, maintaning and improving the basic institutions and values of society. Such a mechanism did exist in africa since the pre colonial times which exerted it influence by means of islam indigenous culture and tradition and afro christianity whose sources such as koran and the bible stimulated a drive for literacy and learning.Everything was still on an oral basis. However the introduction of western education and especially colonial education policies was what pulled up the education level in africa. In conclusion before the arrival of the european missionaries nigerians were already educated but it was the informal method of education, the introduction of western education brought about the formal method of education.Iheanacho juliet o.

To the issue of "Nigeria would have remained uneducated if Europeans has not introduced western education to Africa" i totally disagreed with that.
Let us look at it this way, what do we mean by education?
This could be said to be transfering of knowledge, skills, habit or idea through teaching, training or research. Any kind of acquiring that is able to transform one from what one was to another in terms of skills, idea, knowledge and advice in other to allow one to live a peacefully with the people around him/her and also to be of good impact to his/her community, environment and to any society he/she may find himself/herself, this what education is.
And in the case of education, we have different types of it, which are formal, semi-formal and informal education.
For formal education: it is a kind of education that take place with full setting, it is planned, there must be a proper financing, then teachers(staffs), there must be a checkmate and check up for the work done so far, example of these are primary school, elementary, and also tertiary education.
And the semi formal: it is a kind of education that is closely to that of formal type of education, but lack some of the formal features, it is easy to set up, it doesn't require much fund, staff/s, no much control from external body, one can easily come in and go out of it, one can decide time by his/herself, no age limit in most cases and these are skills types of education like carpentry, weldering, furnituring, bricklaying, hunting, fishing e.t.c
And in the case of informal education, this is a type of education that involve mostly in our daily activities, this can be from anybody, it require no fund, and no need for qualified teachers, anybody can be your teacher, no any form of examination, and in this informal education, it may be a kind of skills, idea, advice and still all transform one for better to meet one end meet, also teach moral and allow one to live happily and peacefully with the people around him or here.
All these explanation so far was to ask if we have not been praticing anyone before their advent?
Were they the one who brought all these to Nigeria? It is capital "NO"
Let us take yoruba people as an example, i was made to know that education has been in existence long time ago before the white people(The europeans) came to Nigeria since 17th century writing and reading of yorura language has been, they wrote then in Ajami script inform of Arabic then,

and even in Northern part of Nigeria which are hausas, they have been into education since 14th century through Arabic education but not well stood then, so how can someone now say without europeans we wouldn't be what we are today, the only thing i know is that they contributed to developement and system of education in Nigeria, and even that was not their major aim then, there intention was to trade with us and bring christianity to us thau was around and due to language barrier and power communication between them and our (Nigerians) they now looked to a way to take away this barrier by give their own education (adding to the one we alread had, and in 1885 - 1945 in which the expansion education now took place.
So, to me i do not agree that without them we would not be to read and write or do other things, were they the one who taught us how to manage the affairs of our homes, communites or how to fish, to farm, to trade, how to respect elders, we have our own way of doing things only that most were informal type of education and semi-formal, though they really tried in contributing to the development of education in Nigeria then, but i know without them we will still be what we will be, who even know may if not that they were involved then may be the education might have even better than this.
For me, i disagree with that.
Thanks.

Nigeria educational system are very clear even before the arrival of western education .
therefore nigerians has been educating their young ones before the arrival of the european. this education was develop from the cultural values of the african society, thus it was informal but useful to the african members of d society. so nigeria will not remain uneducated because there has been a system before d arrival of western education.

I disagree with that because african have a way of educating their young ones before the introduction of the western education. african trained their young ones from their cultural values of the african society like fishing, weaving, carving, knitting, cooking and how to manage a home e.t.c. although the education is informal. it is not in school setting, it has no curriculum, no examination for evaluation but it helps in promoting and preserving african culture, it was cheap. it take place anywhere. it also help to maintain stability and unity among the african society. therefore african has been practicing education before the coming of the western education.

Nigeria would haved been educated if the western did not come. This would shaved happened in diffrent way, probably might not be standard to other African. countries. The coming. of western. to Nigerian
brought. about. great lmpact to every sector in general . the western were able to do this successfully, due to be in nigeria, therefore having been study the problems of the african country, the western came in due 2 their believed that if nigerians are educated in their own way would be better for them concerning their own businesses. one could noticed that before the arrival of the westerner, nigerians has a way of educating their young ones, thus it is informal bt relevant 2 d african society.

I disagree with that ,becouse the reasons is that before the coming of the western education we have been educating our young once, although it was informal education . The traditional/indigenous education is a knowledge base on long term occuppier of a place. Various ethnic groups that constitute modern Nigeria had practice one form of education or the other before the arrival of Islamic or missionary and western education. Before the coming of the western education we have the process by which a child devlops his abilities, attitude,
And other form of behaviour which are positive value to the society in which he live. The ultimate goal is to produce an individual who is honest, respectful, skiled,co operative and who conforms to the social order of the day. The traditional educationas the type of teaching /learning process whose curriculum, methodology, general organisation and admistration structure are patterned in accordance with the opinions, beliefs, customs, principle, experience and prctices of the community in which the education is taking place. The only thing the wesern education do to africa is that he only inprove our education skills and other aspect in education system. Before the coming of the western education we have been involving in informal education like forming, fishing, carving, mat weaving, knitting, and things.

Its unfortunate for the Europians to say that if not for their education, Nigerians would have remained uneducated. It is also ignoramus for a Nigerian to agree with the Europeans that they gave Nigeria education.
Origin of education started from Egypt in Africa. Before the coming of the Europeans, Africans have a way of training their children which is called African Traditional Education. Although this education was informal in nature, it was still relevant to the African Society.

well,i disagree because before the advent of the white men Africans had a way of educating their young ones, though this system was informal,it had values, taught respect, good behavior and it was and still is very functional. the white men didn't come to Africa to give us education but to buy and sell since all this can't be done without a common language they had to introduce a system of communication which led to the introduction of the western education

this is untrue because we Africans have a way of installing discipline in our youth

I disagree with that because, before the coming of the western education our fore father have been educating their children to respect their elders and does in the position of authority, they also taught on how to knit, farm, cook, weave etc also they were taught on how they could develop their physical skills.although it is informal because it can be done anywhere.in conclusion I believe that we nigerian are already educated before the coming of the western education.

Traditional education can be defined as a process in which an individual developed his abilities, attitudes and other forms of behaviour which are positive value to the society. Before this people brought this education to us, African traditional education was still in existence in the sense that people were using part of their body for calculations and also use sound of some birds, cock crows and the shadow cast by the sun as the metric unit of time. Therefore, before they brought to Africans this education, every society has their own way of training the youths for good living .

The term "Education" have been defined and explained by different authors and authorities in the field and all these definitons and explanations focused on what education aims at achieving.
Education attempts to give an individual some desirable knowledge, understanding, skills, interests attitudes and critical thinking. However, this is not necessarily achieved in a formal system of education as it can also be achieved in an informal setting as it is obtainable in the traditional method of education which was in place before the western education.
The western education follows a formal system which design a curriculum that form the basis on which a learner is taught and also organise tests and examinations for evaluation purposes. The history of western education in Nigeria can be traced to the early 15 century as a result of the commercial activities the west wanted to have with Nigerians thus developing the education sector through the missionaries and also introducing christianity as a religion. The essential theme concerning western education involves the scientific and technological advancement shaping it.
Africans as well as Nigerians have a method of educating its people before the introduction of the western education, though, it follows a traditional method of education and might not be sophisticated scientific and technological advanced as that western world but its serve as a basis on which the western education was built.

First education can be defined as a formal way of obtaining knowledge, skills an ability school. while formal education is defined as kind of education that is formalised in the school system, while informal education is d type of education that goes on everywhere outside the school.
I will say there is no doubt that the coming of missionaries had a great influence on Africans in general and Nigerians in particular. they contributed in no little way to Nigerian's development most especially in area of education, economic, social and religion. because Nigerians was operating on informal education and i call dt moral education not academic education. without the western education Nigerians would have no been educated, it really expose us to social way of living and informal way of life.

I proudly disagree with the topic.
Western Education started here in Nigerian and some parts of Africa countries in form of a deceit, and blatant lies. Do you want to ask me how? Fine! This whites lured our Leaders to sign a lot of ridiculous agreements one of which states that they (our obas, emir etc) were ruling under british Colony, Since our forefathers cannot read what was written in their noxious papers. This made the oyinbos feel superior and dictative. They trickly condemned our way of life in terms of Morality, Piety and above all Unity. Therefore, the root of western Education is not to educate but to intimidate. Thanks!

Of no reason will Africans be un-educated because the Africans have methods of training the young ones before the colonial empires arrive with the formal education we have today.Though the educational settings of the Africans then was not formal but the young ones learn certain cultures, values and norms from the elderly ones by training them on how to do some agricultural works(farming, fishing, weaving of baskets and mats,to mention but a few)and also involving in other minning and gold smithing. The Africans have being learning before the introducation of the formal education system.BIO/ISC STUDENT

"Nigerians would have remained uneducated,if the Europeans have not introduced western education to Africa"
For us to answer this question,we have to go as far back as the lifestyle of Africans before the coming of the Europeans. Before the coming of the Europeans to Africa, there has been a form of education in Africa called "informal education".This form of education has been the only means of education.Remember that the world is place that moves and changes with time.If the Europeans had not introduced western education to Africa, one way or the other,Africans would have been formally educated even if it would not be up to the European education standard. Therefore,if the Europeans had not introduced western education to Africa, because of global changes, one way or the other,Africans would have been formally educated.

I disagree long before the europeans arrived, education has been parts of nigeria system where children were taught about culture, social activities, survival, skills and work. Europeans arrived and impacted Their method of education yes it was Good but it was for there own products benefit of/ for understanding. European education was introduced in Nigeria in 1840 which is the 40s it began in Lagos Calabar and Othre coastal cities bit Before the 40s eduction in Nigeria has been a success.
In conclusion i say that education has been ongoing before the arrival of European education.

I totally disagree that before the Western education comes to Africa, education has been going on in Africa especially in Nigeria where our old ones train their children about their cultures.

In Nigeria our forefathers has a way of counting figures and spelling the names of there children befor the arrival of the missionary.

So without the arrival of the Western education, Africa will still be educated and will still stand firm to the culture they have been educated on

I dont agree with dat because before westhern education came to Africa, there has been education system in Africa though informal.Education is not all abt reading and writing, there are also some skill that need to be learnt. And some of these skills are there already even before westhern education was brought. There are also some things that parent teaches their children like culture, and also how to do things like fishing, weaving of baskets etc. These things too are part of education. Traditional education has been in the existance before the arrival of western education. So it is misconception by some people especially the whites, that the missionaries brought education to an entirely uneduated African people. In the words of Osokoya (1999) cited by Asiru (2004:pg.20) if education is the bringing up of individuals in the society. Therefore, every society has its system of training its youths for good living. So,education does not only exist in Nigeria before westernisation, it had transmitted cultural values for many generations.

It is capital "NO"
Let us take yoruba people as an example, i was made to know that education has been in existence long time ago before the white people(The europeans) came to Nigeria since 17th century writing and reading of yoruba language.

Taking a close look at word education firstly,it is bring the desirable change into behaviour of human.thou before the coming of the Europeans,African as a whole has way of educating their children which is known as "informal education" which revolves round the whole and community alone.such ways of educating them includes:teaching them hoe to respect their elders, how to cook, sweep, wash, wrestle,do some craft work like weaving, sculpture work to mention but a few.

now the introduction of western education by the Europeans into African precisely Nigeria now brought about a remarkable change into Nigeria. At this juncture i disagree to agree that without the coming of the Europeans introducing western education,Nigeria wouldn't have been educated reasons because at this time in history of Nigeria,Nigeria has been living in the dark ages i.e a time in the live of Nigerians when only the informal education was their way of learning but the coming of western education now opened their eyes into the real world of civilization of science and technology.the coming of this western education in Nigeria now brought about:
i. national and international unity and understanding.
ii. it removes inequality,poverty,prostitution,robbery,hungry,diseases,illiteracy,ignorance,etc
iii. bringing about individual happiness, peace, morality in the public and self realization.
iv. development of infrastructural facilities/social amenities
v.brought about sense of belonging among Nigerians.
vi. enlighten individuals publicly and intellectual development etc.

However, the coming of western education brought a lot of good things which has been listed above but on the other side of it has wreck a lot of havoc in the society and the nation as a whole such as embezzlement of the nations wealth internet, malpractices in examination, prostitution, highway robbery, etc

At this point,we can use the good to weigh the bad by saying conclusively that without the coming of the Europeans into Africa,Nigeria would have remained uneducated

Education they say can be carried out at any place and at any time due to this, i disagree to d fact dat if the europeans did not introduce western education we would have remained uneducated, because even before the coming of the europeans our forefathers have develop several ways to teach their children. For instance; the girls are being made to learn how to cook from their mothers and also how to take care of their younger ones and the house, the boys are made to either go farming or hunting with their fathersn through this they can earn a living.
Finally, if the eurnpeans had not introduced western education to Africa there would have being nothing like english language and we would have enjoyed education at our own ease because it would have being in our own language.

Am against the fact that the european are the first that brought education to Africa. African has their own way of educating their young ones before western education, although it was an informal educational system. Since the begining of human exiStence, every generation somehow passed its stuck of vaLues, method and skills to the next generation including the traditional education like islamic. People learn social values and behaviour from their parent which is socialization and passing on of culture that is also known as enculturation from generation to generation, all this are also educational system because they are being taught, trained and they learn. Education then, was achieved through demostration and copying as the young learned from their elders. Some form of traditional knowledge were expressed through stories, legend, folklore, rituals and songs without the need for writing system.in conclution Africa has their own educational System before the wwestern education.

The history of western education is a vast subject and beyond the scope of this discussion to cover in it's entirety. However , the essential theme concerning Western Education involves the technological advancement of shaping it. for example , Education is related to mankind's immediate circumstances and the way information is passed to succeeding generation likewise Education can be define as the process or art of imparting knowledge, skills and judgement that have been learned either formally or informally.
Education has been into existences for a very long time in Nigeria until when the European education was introduce into Nigeria in the 1840's. African's has a way of bringing up there own young ones, the children were taught about their culture, social activities, survival skills and work, most of the education processes were impacted into children informally, a few of these societies gave a more formal teaching of the society and culture.
We can only say that the Western Education brought about the formal method of Education and only improve the Education system of Africans.

This are the foundations of education in Nigeria and upon them were western education implemented upon.
European education was introduced into Nigeria in the 1840s . It began in Lagos ,Calabar and other coastal cities ,in a new decades schooling in English language gradually took root in Nigeria.During the colonial years great Britain did not promote education , the schools were set up and promoted buy christian missionaries. In conclusion Africans had been educated before the existence of western education.

I thank God for Western Education because we would have remained blind. The enjoyment of African today basically from Western Education, we have so many things in our country today that improve us both in knowledge and financially. In the olden days i.e. before the introduction of Western Education, many African were killed because of cultural way of living, killing of twins, burying the king with innocent souls. But the introduction of Western Education had made it easier for us to see light again. If a man is born blind, he may not appreciate what it means to see the light, but once his sight is recovered he would definitely not want to be throw back into perpetual darkness. Ignorance, Darkness and Blindness are terms that could be interchangeably used to describe the state of Nigeria before the introduction of Western Education. No matter how good an environment may be, it would neither be seen nor appreciated in darkness. Anything good need to appreciate with light and anything that is not good enough or throw away anything that is bad outright. Western Education came with light appreciating treasures we had with us all the time but never discovered right under the ground. Then it was called the “black gold”. The discovery of crude oil in Nigeria would not have been possible without our embarking Western Education. The proceeds from crude have no little way contributed to the development in Nigeria today.
Western Education brought literacy; the ability to read and write has immensely helped in the acquisition of knowledge and set the foundation for our educational system today. They brought other dividends of Westernization like electricity, pipe-borne water improved healthcare system, mechanized agriculture with improved yields, the internate making us a part of the global village GSM technology making communication easier and faster. The list can go on and on. Western education also enables us to celebrate the values in our traditional and cultural norms while also giving us the courage to eradicate or discard the barbaric aspects. It was western educations that put an end to the killing of twins. The burring alive of certain people with a king when he dies.
Without western education, Nigeria would not have been as united as we are today, because western educations brought the English Language which is our official language and make it easy for a nation with over a too language to be able to interact. Western education also brought the game of football which causes all Nigerians to speak on language.
Infact any right thinking Nigerian would no doubt agree that the role of western education in the development of Nigeria cannot be undermined. We might have not gotten to where we are going today. Thanks God to western education.

Those skill benefit their young ones. To discriminate between african education and western education,we can see that in our character when they bring their western education our character have change from the one our father have given to us.The girls can not kneel down to greet their parents also the boys everything have change entirely in due of dressing you see us putting on uncover cloth.when our father dress decently in their days.western don't bring anything but suffering to us

It is obvious that many people believed that
without the coming of European western education African wouldn't be educated but I disagree with this say, before the coming of Europeans there was an indigenous education system in Africa.
I will like to give assertion that "African children in pre colonial period learn what they live ".
What one would say without any argument is that education existed for as long as human being started living in their society in Africa. This type of education is known as indigenous African education or traditional African education. This type of education exist in African way back before the coming of the missionaries.
However ,the missionaries came along with what is known as modern education or western education. Each form of education had it's own strength and weaknesses. When the missionaries came, they only look at the weakness of traditional African indigenous education and concluded based on what they saw that African were uneducated .
little did the missionaries consider the m erits of indigenous African education even neglecting the fact the African children in precolonial period learnt what they lived because they acquired. informal education which is the life long process whereby every individuals acquire attitude, values, skills and knowledge from daily experience and other education where one learn's how to survive in life through experience and instruction from the elders by adapting to the environment.
Therefore, if education never exist , then people would never have managed to survive in the society. Therefore ,every society has its system of training its youth for good living.

I totally disagree with that because the traditional system of education has been in existence even before the western education. The traditional education was relevant to the african society in so many ways which are:-developing of physical skill of the villagers, developing of characters, respect of elders and those in position and it also serves as a foundation upon which the future of the child is built on.
Before the coming of the western education, people were involved in vocational skills also the islamic education was in existence.. So i strongly disagree with you that Nigerians would have remained uneducated because we have our own way of life before their arrival.

It is capital "NO"
Let us take yoruba people as an example, i was made to know that education has been in existence long time ago before the white people(The europeans) came to Nigeria since 17th century writing and reading of yoruba language.

HISTORY OF EDUCATION IN NIGERIA
“Nigeria would have remained uneducated if Europeans did not introduce western education to Africa” Discuss.
I will like to start with the definition of education by Akinkuotu (Referred from “a handbook on history of education in Nigeria”) who defined education as the transfer of past knowledge, skills, and values of the entire human society from generations to generations in order to prepare the individual for their positive contribution to their selves and their society and to help the individual to attain the development of his potentialities and also to achieve his ideal self-fulfillment in the society of which he is a part.
So before the coming of western education we Nigerians have our own way of education which is called Traditional Education. This education is informal because learning takes place anywhere and anybody can be your teacher. People transfer their knowledge to their young ones to carry it from generations to generations, but it was based on practical activities.
Nigerians were educated already before the introduction of western education. When western education came, Nigerians were training their young ones in the areas of development of a child’s talent, physical skills, character development, the development of intellectual skill e.t.c… Western Education helps us in the area of reading, writing and new languages but practical skills was already passed on from father to child, family to family, society to personalities.
With this I believe it is safe to say that with or without the western education, Nigerians although informally were already educated.

HISTORY OF EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

Long before the Europeans arrived, education had been part of Nigerians. The Children were taught about their culture, social activities, survival skills and work. Most of these education processes were impacted into the children informally; a few of these societies gave a more formal teaching of the society and culture.

In these Societies, there are formal instructions that governed the rites of passage from youth into adulthood. The youth is expected to have attained the necessary social and survival skills as well as having a grounded knowledge in the culture. These are the foundations of education in Nigeria, and upon them were the western education implemented upon.

European Education was introduced into Nigeria in the 1840s. It began in Lagos, Calabar and other coastal cities. In a few decades schooling in English language gradually took roots in the Nigeria. During the Colonial years, Great Britain did not promote education. The schools were set up and operated by Christian Missionaries. The British colonial government only funded a few schools. The policy of the government was to give grant to mission schools rather than expand the system.

In the northern part of Nigeria, which was predominantly Muslim populated, Western-style education was prohibited. The religious leaders did not want the missionaries interfering with Islam. This gave way to establishing Islamic school that focused primarily on the Islamic education.

Today, adult literacy has been estimated to be over 78 percent for men and 64 percent for women. These statistics were made based on estimate literacy in English. That excludes the literacy in Arabic among northern Muslims. It is therefore not erroneous to call Nigeria a nation dominated with educated persons.

In 1970s more universities were founded which include University of Benin (founded in 1970), and new university opened in Calabar, Ilorin, Jos, Port Harcourt, Sokoto and Maiduguri. In the 1980s, more universities were opened as well as institute specializing in Agriculture and Technology. A number of Polytechnics were also opened, which includes the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos and Kaduna Polytechnics.

In 1980, the estimated enrollment in the primary schools was 12 million, Secondary and technical colleges 1.2 million, teachers colleges 240,000 and Universities 75,000. One would expect that with such an estimate, the Nigerian education in Nigeria three decades after would have greatly improved. Unfortunately the reverse has been the case.

The damage to the educational system has been done. Most graduates lack the necessary survival and social skills that should have been learnt in schools. These have led to many disastrous situations in the nation. The center of the nation's growth "the Education system" no longer holds value; hence the entire nation is falling apart. Products of the Nigeria education system are not employable, causing massive unemployment and under-development in the country. No survival skills leading to increased poverty rate in the country.

Before the arrival of the british in early nineteenth century, there were two major types of education in Nigeria. In the islamic north, education was strictly religious in nature. In each muslim community, a mallam drilled children as young as five years old in the teaching of the Quran and arabic alphabet. During the colonial era, larger cities set up more expensive islamic schools that included subjects such as maths and sciences.
